Abstract: This talk explores the transition from 5G to 6G and the pivotal role of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) in shaping future wireless systems. I will begin by outlining the key differences between 5G and 6G, followed by an introduction to advanced RIS prototypes designed for intelligent control of the radio environment. Through theoretical analysis, extensive simulations, and precise hardware fabrication, we evaluate reflective, transmissive, and Simultaneous Transmissive and Reflective (STAR) RIS designs across representative wireless scenarios. Each configuration offers distinct advantages in signal shaping and system performance depending on the deployment context. The talk highlights the versatility of RIS technology and provides practical insights into selecting the most suitable RIS architecture for communication, computing, and sensing applications in emerging 6G networks.

Abstract: The sixth generation of mobile communications (6G) is emerging as a transformative leap beyond 5G, promising ultra-high data rates, sub-millisecond latency, and seamless global connectivity. Key enabling technologies include terahertz frequency bands, AI-native network orchestration, integrated sensing and communication, and deep space-terrestrial network integration. 6G aims to support advanced applications such as holographic communications, digital twins, autonomous systems, and immersive extended reality (XR).

Professor Emeritus Dr Tharek Abd Rahman, FASc holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom, Master’s Degree in Communications Engineering from University of Manchester, United Kingdom; and PhD in Mobile Communication from University of oof Bristol, United Kingdom. Professor Emeritus Dr Tharek Abd Rahman was a Professor of Wireless Communications at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Professor Emeritus Dr Tharek has published over 500 scientific papers and journals whereby his ideas won national and international recognition. He is an active member of several research academic entities and has been appointed as Fellow of Academic of Science Malaysia (FASc) and MCMC Advisor.
Professor Emeritus Dr Tharek plays a key role in developing 5G Malaysia initiatives. In the 1990s, he was involved in ITU Task Force 8/1 related to the IMT2000 (3G) Standardization. He connects academia and the telecommunication industry, forming effective collaboration and partnerships. This includes the engagements with Japan’s 5G Mobile Communications Promotion Forum (5G MF) and Korea’s 5G Forum, which promotes knowledge transfer and the collaboration in 5G research and development.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohsen Khalily, University of Surrey
Mohsen Khalily is currently an Associate Professor in Antennas and Propagation and the Head of the Surface Electromagnetics Lab (SEMLAB) at the Institute for Communication Systems, University of Surrey, UK. He has published four book chapters and almost 250 academic articles in international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and has been the Principal Investigator on research grants totalling in excess of £5 million in the field of surface electromagnetics. He is the leading rapporteur for the work item on implementation and practical considerations of the Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) in the dedicated Industry Specification Group within the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). His research interests include surface electromagnetics, Metamaterials, Topological Insulators, mmWave and THz antennas and propagation modelling. He is a Senior Member IEEE, a fellow of the U.K. Higher Education Academy and serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transaction on Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, and Scientific Reports (Nature-Index).
Mr. Yeoh Chun Yeow, Director, Centre of Excellence for Advance Cloud / Member of 5G Sub-WG MTSFB
Mr. Chun-Yeow Yeoh graduated with a first-class honours in B.Eng. Electrical Electronic in 2001 and a M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2003 from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor, Malaysia. He is currently Principal Researcher at Telekom R&D Sdn. Bhd. (TMRND).
He has previously worked with Cozybit inc. in San Francisco Bay Area as staff engineer on 802.11s mesh networking and has contributed to Linux kernel. His research interests include the MAC layer of wireless communication technologies on Wi-Fi and 4G/5G, embedded system, software-hardware co-design and Linux system. He has received the best paper award in IEEE ICIT, Shenzhen, China in 2007 and outstanding paper award in IEEE ICACT 2018, South Korea. He was appointed as TM R&D delegate to 3GPP 4G/5G standardization group and has previously contributed technical written documents to RAN2/RAN3 Technical Specification Group (TSG).
He has involved in leading the development of TM Open Innovation Platform (OIP), a multi-layer digital infrastructure serving as a data brokerage system, an API aggregation platform and an end-to-end IoT platform for smart services utilizing mMTC connectivity. He has worked on multiple cloud services, including GCP, Digital Ocean, TM Cloud Alpha Edge and etc. for enabling the TM R&D leading services and edge containerization for tackling edge issue related to cloud native application. He has filed several patents related to cellular communication, wireless technologies, cloud services and software solutions.
He has currently served as the chair of IMT-2020 SWG, the vice chair of V2X SWG and active contributor to 5G broadcast SWG under Malaysian Technical Standard Forum Berhad (MTSFB), contributing towards the 5G System and Architecture Specification. He has also currently contributed his expertise as a member of the Industry Advisory Panel (IAP) for TAR UMT and INTI International University & Colleges.
His vision is to further strengthen the COE with emerging technologies for advanced computing.
Mr. Syed Khairulazrin Syed Khairuldin, Director, Policy (Asia Pacific), GSMA
Syed Khairulazrin serves on the GSMA Public Policy team, driving industry advocacy and regulatory engagement across the Asia-Pacific region. He leads work at the intersection of trust, digital governance, and emerging technologies, with a focus on AI, data protection, cybersecurity, and anti-fraud measures.
Prior to GSMA, he was the Head of the Spectrum Planning and Assignment in the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the Malaysian regulatory agency that oversees the communication and multimedia activities. He has also made significant contributions to high-level policy-making matters, including forging strategic initiatives in encouraging the adoption of new technologies to facilitate the evolution of the industry, in local, regional and international fora such as meetings, conferences and forums organised by the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Syed was also actively involved in providing training and coaching, and help guide various stakeholders on regulatory matters within communication and multimedia industry.
Ts. Ahmad Zhafri Zaini, Chief Operating Officer (COO), IX Telecom
Ts. Ahmad Zhafri Zaini is a seasoned technology and operations leader with over two decades of experience spanning telecommunications, banking, and enterprise IT. Currently serving as Chief Operating Officer at IX Telecom, he drives strategic execution, operational excellence, and cross-functional alignment across global teams. Zhafri has played a pivotal role in Malaysia’s digital transformation, notably leading the national 5G infrastructure rollout at Digital Nasional Berhad. His expertise encompasses 5G MOCN architecture, network performance optimization, and digital operations, underpinned by a strong foundation in IP networks, cloud, and cybersecurity.
Throughout his career, Zhafri has held senior leadership roles at CIMB, UOB, Maxis, Celcom, and Cisco, where he led large-scale infrastructure programs, compliance initiatives, and enterprise architecture strategies. He is a certified professional engineer (Ts.), a recognized industry advisor, and a passionate advocate for ethical technology, innovation, and talent development. Zhafri holds a Master’s degree in Telecommunications & Information Engineering from UiTM and a Bachelor’s in Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering from Multimedia University. He is also a certified expert in SDN/NFVi, cloud infrastructure, RAN, Transport, Core, Enterprise network, Datacenter infrastructure and network security, while continuing to contribute to Malaysia’s tech ecosystem through advisory roles and community engagement.
Mr. Zaaim Redha, CTO and COO of Zeta IoS
Zaaim Redha has over 30 years of experiences in Satellite Communication and Space Systems. In the past, he worked for Motorola , Maxis/Measat, NEC Japan, Loral Space & Communication, ASC Signal and Kratos Defense in the US. Throughout his career, he has been involved in design and development of various LEO and MEO satellite systems, including mobile satellite system, satellite IOT and Earth Observation satellite constellations. In recent years, he was engaged by SpaceX as a consultant to prepare Malaysia backend infrustructure for launching of Starlink satellite internet services. Zaaim earned his double BS degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering as well as
an MS degree in Physics, all from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York.
Ts. James Lai, Chairman of Malaysia Internet-of-Things Association (MyIoTA)
With 20 years of experience in Test & Measurement, software development / simulation / design tools, Industrial Automation & IoT (Internet of Things), James held various technical roles as Applications Engineer & later Field Support Engineer at National Instruments & Agilent Technologies. During his career, James had conducted various technical training, workshops and appeared as speaker at conferences such as Mobile World Congress, Digitech, TEDx etc.. He is the founder & principal consultant for IoT Labs – an IoT consultancy & integration services firm. James is also the founder & current president of MyIoTA (Malaysia Internet-of-Things Association), that was established in 2016 to drive the growth of the IoT eco-system in the region, and to promote AIoT applications as solutions to problems by both enterprises and public at large. MyIoTA is a permanent member of the National 5G Taskforce Working Group, contributor to the National Industry 4.0 Policy Framework, and a member of National AI Office WG.
Norhudah Seman
received B. Eng. (Electrical-Telecommunications) from Universiti Teknologi
Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia, in 2003 and M. Eng. in Radio Frequency and Microwave
Communications from The University of Queensland, Australia, in 2005. She
obtained her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from The University of
Queensland in 2010. In 2003, she was an Engineer at Motorola Technology Penang,
where she was involved in the RF and microwave components design and testing.
She was Director (Communication Engineering) from July 2018 to June 2021, and
Acting Director (Communication Engineering) from July 2021 to June 2022 at the School
of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UTM. Currently, she is an Associate
Professor in Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) and Director of HICoE of
Wireless Communication Centre (WCC), UTM. She has been involved in two Marie
Skłodowska-Curie Actions Grants’ ATOM and SwiftV2X, and led ~14 research
grants. Currently, she leads a collaborative research grant involving four
institutions in Malaysia on the biological effects of 5G, a collaborative grant
with Indonesia, and four national grants. She is also involved in the Malaysia
Ministry of Health (MoH) Interagency Working Committee (IAWC) on the Health
Effects of Non-Ionising Radiation and related guidelines. Her research
interests concern wireless communications, design of microwave/millimeter-wave
devices, the effects of electromagnetic field radiation, including specific
absorption rate (SAR) and power density, with ~138 publications.
Dr. Stefan Parkvall, Senior Expert at Ericsson Research, Sweden
Stefan Parkvall [F] is currently a Senior Expert at Ericsson Research working with research on 6G and future radio access. He is one of the key persons in the development of HSPA, LTE and NR radio access and has been deeply involved in 3GPP standardization for many years. Dr Parkvall is a fellow of the IEEE, served as an IEEE Distinguished lecturer 2011-2012, and is co-author of several popular books such as “3G Evolution – HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband”, “4G – LTE/LTE-Advanced for Mobile Broadband”, “4G, LTE Advanced Pro and the Road to 5G”, and “5G NR – The Next Generation Wireless Access”. He holds thousands of patents in the area of mobile communication. In 2005, he received the Ericsson "Inventor of the Year" award, in 2009 the Swedish government’s Major Technical Award for his contributions to the success of HSPA, and in 2014 he and colleagues at Ericsson was one of three finalists for the European Inventor Award, the most prestigious inventor award in Europe, for their contributions to LTE. Dr Parkvall received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in 1996. His previous positions include assistant professor in communication theory at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, and a visiting researcher at University of California, San Diego, USA.
Ir. Dr. Siva Priya Thiagarajah, Faculty of AI and Engineering, Multimedia University (MMU)
Ir. Siva Priya (PEPC, MIEM) obtained her PhD in Engineering in 2021 and M.Eng Telecommunications in 2011 from Multimedia University, and B.Eng in Electrical (Telecommunications) in 2004 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She brings with her over 8 years of industry experience in satellite communications, VSAT & earth station implementation & testing, customer support, RF interference resolution, RF spectrum management, satellite procurement and international frequency regulations and coordination. With 13 years of academia experience since 2011, Ir. Siva Priya is currently Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Engineering, MMU, where she actively pursues research in Vehicle to Everything (V2X), 4G / 5G radio resources optimization, machine learning for resource allocation, radio channel propagation modelling, IoT based solutions, smart farming, sustainable power supply systems for telecommunication base stations and second life electrical vehicle battery solutions. Siva Priya is actively involved in Knowledge Transfer Programs and community outreach activities and has lead over seven IoT based Smart Farm implementations in schools and farmer cCOrp Certified Trainer and trains in high impact presentation skills, e-commerce, digital marketing, workplace safety and engineering project management. She is also panel evaluator for engineering programs by the Engineering Accreditation Council, under the purview of the Board of Engineers. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, hiking and yoga.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Imran Mohd Ibrahim, Universiti Teknikal Melaka (UTeM)
Imran Mohd Ibrahim is an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. He received his bachelor, master and doctoral degree from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, all in electrical engineering, in 2000, 2005, and 2016, respectively. He served as faculty’s inaugural Deputy Dean (Research and Post Graduate Study) and contributed to the early development of research activities at faculty and institution. He has lead several grants from industry, government and university in antenna research and wireless communication. He is also a committee member to IMT and Future Networks Working Group under Malaysia Technical Standard Forum Berhad. He also serves as drafter to the Technical Code, Prediction and Measurement of RF-EMF Exposure from Base Station. He has published more than 100 journals and conference papers. His research interests are antenna and microwave device design. He also supervised a PhD and Master students by research in antenna design for beyond 5G and medical application. He was elevated to IEEE Senior Membership in 2021 based on his significant contribution in Electrical and Electronic Engineering field. In January 2023, he has appointed as TVET ambassador for UTeM for the project Knowledge Transfer and Mobile Wifi Router Installation for Rural School Area.
